ITEM #1
A New Moving WebWord article is now online:
<http://webword.com/moving/banners.html>
Banner ads don't really work on the Internet. People
don't like them, they don't generate much money, and
they can seriously detract from a web site's usability.
I'm not the first to say these things, and I won't be
the last. If you care about online marketing or if you
are considering the use of banner ads on your site, you
might want have a peek at the article.

A New WebWord.com Expert Interview is now online:
<http://webword.com/interviews/cluetrain.html>
I wonder, have you heard about the Cluetrain Manifesto
yet <http://www.cluetrain.com>? If not, take
a look at
what these folks have to say, it is great stuff. Now, if
you'd like a behind-the-scenes look at the Cluetrain,
then you'll want to read the interview I conducted with
Christopher Locke and David Weinberger.
Read the interview for the inside scoop:

ITEM #3
My NetMedia99 Presentation is now online:
<http://webword.com/reports/netmedia99/>
As many of you know, I recently attended the NetMedia99
Conference in London put on by the City University.
The conference audience was mainly for journalists, and
related media folks. If you'd like, view the conference
overview here <http://www.soi.city.ac.uk/netmedia/>.
You can view my full presentation online. To navigate
the presentation, be sure to scroll vertically (you'll
see links that take you forward and backward, and also
a list of all the pages I presented, at the bottom of
each page).
I had a great time and I want to thank everyone that
was involved. Milverton Wallace and his associates, put
together a great conference. I also had a chance to meet
many new and interesting people.
Finally, I have some observations to pass along:
1) As in the past, I had the impression that usability
was considered late in the development cycle (if at
all). For usability to be most effective, usability
testing needs to occur early in development.
2) For many people, usability was a new concept. However
many people saw the virtues of employing usability
techniques in their future design cycles.
3) Most web sites are too "Americanized" and are simply
not international enough. Most US web designers
completely ignore or reject cultural factors. Perhaps
this is due to time, and budget constraints (and
perhaps company focus too).

Usability Tidbits and Interesting WebSites
1. Chroniques de Cybérie

See what Jean-Pierre Cloutier has to say about
a wide variety of topics. Before you visit, you'll
need to brush up on your French.

3. Web Promotion and Usability?
<http://www.sitesell.com/thinkbig.html>
I have finally found a web marketing approach that
seriously considers usability. I've learned a ton
from reading Ken Evoy's "Make Your Site Sell", and I
highly recommend it to you. If you read only one
marketing book this year, make it this one...he has
an entire chapter devoted to usability. Incredible!
You can download and read the first few chapters of
the book for free.
