Working the guidelines -- "Of the sites that you've uncovered in your research, think about the conventions and what may or may not work for your site and your customers. If you don't think the conventions make sense for you, you have two choices: develop and conduct a series of usability tests that compare the convention with any alternative you want to use or look for research that validates or refutes the convention. You'll save money and time by reviewing the research of others rather than conducting your own."
