Modeling XML Vocabularies with UML: Part I -- "Historically, in system analysis and design, a variety of techniques, tools, and methodologies has existed for guiding and supporting these alternative models of system structure and behavior. In the absence of formal methods or tools, models are created using PowerPoint, Visio, or paper and pencil to help communicate a system's purpose and function. And when there are no written models, system architects work from mental models as a way to comprehend the whole and its parts." (Comments: I like talking about systems design and analysis. Indeed, I spend huge chunks of my day doing this kind of stuff. However, very few companies actually develop structured models of their systems. In fact, I can't think of a single small or medium business that has spent the time to develop good structured models of their systems. As the quote above indicates, some basic models can be built with PowerPoint or Visio, but they aren't usually structured. I have to laugh a little bit at articles like this because even using terms like DTD, schema, and UML, make many eyes glaze over. It seems noble yet futile. What is your experience?)
