01/06/2002 Entry: "6-Jan-2002 -- What the Hell is XML?"

What the Hell is XML? (A List Apart) -- "XML (Extensible Markup Language) IS THE EURODOLLAR OF WEB DEVELOPMENT. Both XML and the Euro bring order to chaos; both offer undeniable, wide–ranging benefits; both are poised, in 2002, to change the way we do things. Frankly, both scare the crap out of people."

The comparison of XML to databases, instead of HTML, is a poor one. The author begins his article talking about the need to "conquer fears." If that is a goal, then he *should* be comparing XML to HTML because HTML is more familiar to web designers. It is less formidable. The first thing I thought when seeing XML was, "huh, it's a lot like HTML."

Oh, I'm sick of the XML hype (and I've built a CMS using XML, mind you).

John, have you read this article yet? It's an excellent in-depth explanation of why XML isn't the answer to the world's problems :)
