WebWord Weblog Posting Posting Date: August 19, 2002 WebWord Comment -- I'm going to paraphrase an email message that was sent to me. First, Uncle Jakob™ attacks Macromedia and Flash. Second, Uncle Jakob™ gets into bed with Macromedia to improve Flash, which he claims has improved recently and isn't so bad now. Third, Uncle Jakob™ asks the usability community to provide him with examples of sites that work and don't work. Finally, Uncle Jakob™ sells his advice to the community regarding the sites that they suggested and the research that Macromedia has already paid him for. Devious, no?

I hold John accountable. He linked to Filbert again this week. John is an enabler. (you figure it out) Posted by: Jack on August 19, 2002 09:43 AM
I prefer to think of myself as something like a muckraker. Posted by: John S. Rhodes on August 19, 2002 10:09 AM
Nah, John talks about how Filbert is bad for us, but then he gives us more Filbert, excused away with a cautionary warning to make his conscience feel better. Either Filbert causes cancer or he doesn't. If you love us John, don't watch us die premature deaths and then cast blame on our graves. You made us this way. You're our role model. We look to you for example, but only see you outside, as usual, toking another Filbert. Posted by: Jack on August 19, 2002 10:30 AM
You're preaching to the choir here, John. Why bother? Posted by: MadMan on August 19, 2002 11:02 AM
If ever Uncle Jakob™ were to visit this site, I dare say that your chances of another interview with him would be slim indeed. ;) Calling him the "supreme guru of web usability" and then calling him an ass, well... not many take it well. Posted by: MadMan on August 19, 2002 11:14 AM
Why is everyone so obsessed with this Jakob Neilsen dude? Posted by: mcw on August 19, 2002 11:40 AM
I didn't start this one...did I? Posted by: JB on August 19, 2002 12:27 PM
From a web reading perspective there are just way to many hyperlinks in that paragraph.
JB, there are too many links because there are too many links. Perhaps I should have used bullets. Posted by: John S. Rhodes on August 19, 2002 02:15 PM
Sorry, John, you just didn't hyperlink properly. The usability of your links was bad. My version: WebWord Comment -- I'm going to paraphrase an email message that was sent to me. First, Uncle Jakob™ attacks Macromedia and Flash. Second, And that's keeping your sentences intact. Since this doesn't pay much, I'm not going to rewrite them for you too. :p Posted by: MadMan - the real keeper of Webword on August 19, 2002 04:47 PM
Sounds like good business to me: 1) Consultant publicly criticizes product. Classic! 1) Consultant requests examples of product results. Another classic! Posted by: Ron Zeno on August 19, 2002 04:49 PM
Last comment before I go to bed: What this site needs is a "best discussions on Webword" list, much like Scott Berkun is doing for SIGIA-L and CHI-WEB on his site. Would certainly enhance the community experience. Posted by: MadMan - the Indian usability king on August 19, 2002 04:51 PM
1) Uncle Filbert gets into bed with Macromedia All this talk about bed. Here's what I want to know from Filbert -- is Macromedia any good in bed? Is it true what they say -- size matters? Or is it how you use it? Imagine if Filbert wrote a book on sex. "Over the last 1.5 years, the average compliance with established love-making guidelines increased by 4%. If we can sustain this level of improvement, we'll reach the ideal of 90% guideline compliance in 2017. Unfortunately, because libido diminishes with age, I do not anticipate a correlation between compliance and satisfaction." http://www.useit.com/alertbox/20020624.html
Ew - ew - ew - ew - ew! I curse you, Jack. Posted by: Lydia on August 19, 2002 07:11 PM
Worse than devious: harmful. Nielsen is doing his community a great disservice. I wish there was a 'hall of shame' to put him in. Sherlock Posted by: sherlock_yoda on August 20, 2002 04:03 AM
..and Macromedia don't seem to be changing their spots after making much ado... hall of shame enclosed. Posted by: Waffle on August 20, 2002 07:01 AM
