WebWord Weblog Posting Posting Date: October 02, 2002 Mikasa Table for Two Columbus Circle 10-Piece Dinnerware Set (amazon.com) -- "Mac, you're about to unlock your Gold Box™ offers!" (Mac comments: What is the first item in your Gold Box™ today? Is this feature more than junk mail? )

I really hate this feature. It sits there in the corner of my browser, begging me to give it some attention. Whenever I do I am always disappointed. Today my number one item is can only be shipped within the U.S. Amazon KNOW I live in the UK, why are they offering it to me! Posted by: Mac on October 2, 2002 06:48 AM
hah, my one is actually rather cool. But the fun doesn't end there because also included in this gift pack is a Super Charger Triple Charge. Equipped with three cartridges and a torso harness, this 16.5-inch-long water weapon offers no sympathy to the enemy. But I find the constant gold-larger-than-the-logo box nagging in the corner annoying. Posted by: Timo on October 2, 2002 07:19 AM
Amazon better watch out, or George "Geronimo" Bush may be after them for encouraging the use of 'weapons of mass suction' ! Posted by: Mac on October 2, 2002 07:49 AM
Mine is actually "Electronic Spider Stompin' Game". And btw, Mac IS the usability guru of the net. Posted by: Frank on October 2, 2002 10:49 AM
I actually purchased something from my gold box -- a pack of disposable cameras for my upcoming wedding. There have been some things that were good enough deals that I'd have bought if I didn't feel so poor right now (all extra funds going to the wedding). Most of the tools aren't things I'd be interested in at this time (routers, or jigs for making cabinet doors) but if my sweetie resumed a woodworking habit those items might be appropriate. Frank, never a guru or a shoveller be: Which makes me think that I would like to see amazon employees appearing at random occasionally in my gold box. I could look at their picture and find out what they do all day. Posted by: Mac on October 2, 2002 12:46 PM
The Gold Box is e-junk, plain and simple. I find it disturbing, because it is trying to suggest things based on previous buying habits - the more you buy, the better it gets. On one level, this makes it better than paper junk mail, but on a different level, that kind of knowledge gives me the willies. It is times like these that I think about living in a nice log cabin somewhere in the woods with just a husky dog and a view. Anita, congratulations on upcoming wedding!! Mine was one of those cool wine openers and I just paid double for one about three weeks ago...damn you Amazon, damn you gold box of mystery. Posted by: JB on October 2, 2002 03:25 PM
I've never bought from Amazon.com, as the .co.uk site usually does the trick for me, so I can't open my Gold Box. I'm dying to know what's in there, if only for amusement purposes. Oh, the UK site doesn't do the gold-box-thing, along with many other features on the .com site. In fact, I find myself using the .com site for researching potential purchases more than the uk site because of those features. Posted by: Alan on October 3, 2002 04:30 AM
