WebWord Weblog Posting Posting Date: November 24, 2002 WebWord Comment -- Holiday advice! If you are like me, then you are obligated or otherwise asked to give friends and relatives advice about new computers and computer parts. With the holiday season upon us, this activity can eat up a lot of time. So many requests from so many people. Today I read a good article that will help you help other people. For those people that can handle technical jargon and want to dig into the details, consider sending them to The Ars Buyer's Guide. I often hit Tom's Hardware too, just to get up to snuff on the latest jargon. If you are looking for advice on where to shop online for a computer, I've been happy with Dell in the past. However, I really like ABS Computer; excellent prices and top notch components. Service has been good too. For what it is worth, their prices are sometimes a couple hundred dollars less than Dell's with better parts. Not surprisingly, I've recommended ABS several times. When people need technical help, I often tell them to go to Google first. Like plenty other people, I treat Google as my HelpDesk, my first line of defense. Once in a while I find myself hitting sites like HelpOnTheNet and How Stuff Works. I hate to admit it, but the Microsoft support site isn't too bad. I often end up there via Google. So, that wraps up my holiday advice guide for three areas: what to look for when buying a computer, where to buy a computer, and getting help with your computer. Hopefully this information is useful. Feel free to share your advice.
