I bought a new computer case and CPU cooler the other week specifically with the intention of getting the thing to run more quietly. It makes a huge difference. My computer is set up in our living room, and I can now leave it running without it being a constant noisy intrusion in our daily lives.

It might not be cheap, but I can recommend it as a worthwhile investment.
