WebWord Weblog Posting Posting Date: February 23, 2003 WebWord Interview and Book Lottery -- Michael Twidale is an Associate Professor in the Graduate School of Library and Information Science at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. This is his home page and CV. He has published a ton of excellent articles including a recent article on usability and open source software (PDF). He's a smart cookie, and he is interested in many things we care about. Michael is waiting for our interview questions so fire away! For every good interview question you ask (I'm the judge), I will give you one chance to win a book of my choice. (If your name is pulled, I'll ship it to you for free!) I'll send the best questions to Dr. Twidale to answer. I'm going to send him our questions and pull the winner of the free book on Wednesday.

1) From your bookstore photo, if I don't turn left for metaphysical books and don't turn right for computer books, what books will I find on the other side of the bookshelf on which the sign is hung? 2) What are your feelings about the ~ tilde in your URL? Without meaning to sound condescending, may I politely ask how the research you do is utilized and whether any successful commercial products have been developed based on/inspired from this research? Posted by: Manu Sharma on February 24, 2003 02:22 PM
I'm curious as to whether you've given any thought to the shrinking interface of wireless connected mobile devices: smart phones, wireless PDAs, thin-client devices, etc. Not only is there the obvious scaling down of screen space, but there's also the challenge of how to handle dropped packets, connections, and so forth from a user-interface perspective (e.g., do you make the user reload, suspend the app., end it, etc.). My question is: What do you see as the number one challenge facing the usability of these mobile devices and how do you propose that challenge will be overcome? It seems like much of the people involved in internet development talk about the design and implementation of usable websites, but seldom practice usability. Do you think usability will become a part of mainstream internet development and not just used as a buzz word? Posted by: Tom Altman on February 25, 2003 08:04 AM
Most usability research concentrates on the initial visit. Have you any advise or research focussed on the user's 50th visit to a site? Posted by: Si Cox on February 25, 2003 09:24 AM
1) How would you test for situations that were never envisioned at the time of development? People using products in unexpected ways isn't uncommon. 2) What is your opinion on the reliablity of usability tests, given that usability experts can't even seem to agree on what the major usability problems are.
