WebWord Weblog Posting Posting Date: March 12, 2003 Unskilled and Unaware of It: How Difficulties in Recognizing One's Own Incompetence Lead to Inflated Self-Assessments (Journal of Personality and Social Psychology, 1999) -- "People tend to hold overly favorable views of their abilities in many social and intellectual domains. The authors suggest that this overestimation occurs, in part, because people who are unskilled in these domains suffer a dual burden: Not only do these people reach erroneous conclusions and make unfortunate choices, but their incompetence robs them of the metacognitive ability to realize it." Ron, I'm not sure about your comments on "Difficulties in Recognizing One's Own Incompetence" - in particular it does not consider whether these unfortunates have learned to ignore negative feedback because of e.g. bad parents. But I love your blog and have bookmarked it - along with 6 items I've just found from it! Posted by: Philip Chalmers on March 14, 2003 06:57 PM
