Unplug That Projector! -- "Tufte is not merely having fun here. In many companies, important decisions come out of meetings in which PowerPoint slides define the agenda."

Tufte's book "Visual Display of Quantitative Informatiuon..." is a great reference for people involved in developing charts and graphs.

We have all seen examples of very bad presentations, before the invention of Powerpoint I saw plenty bad presnetations on transparent overheads. Powerpoint reduced the time and cost to produce bad presentations. The root cause is inability to communicate properly and connect with the intended audience.

The other root problems are lack of time and lack of confidence.

In principle you should write the notes first, review them and then, when reasonably happy, produce the slides. Through lack of time people produce the slides first, just to be sure they have something to show.

And a lot of people lack the confidence to talk without slides.
